In October I went to Estes Park, Colorado to the Stanley Hotel. It was built in 1909 by Freelan O. Stanley, who invented the Stanley Steamer. This is the hotel that inspired, Stephen King to write, The Shining. The film with Jack Nicholson, was not filmed there, but the mini series done in more recent years was. The painting is based on a photo I took. This is a view that looks out onto the large front porch, toward the mountains in Rocky Mountain National Park.

The sunrises in Colorado are as spectacular as the sunsets, but the ones in January seem to be the best of all. This is from a photo I took last week from my bedroom window. It was the first time I tried something like this, and will not be the last, although trying to capture the grandeur of such a sight is a daunting task.

When we go for our walks in the morning, I always carry my camera with me. I love taking shots of birds and I have hundreds of them, so finally felt it was time to paint one. Some of our favorites are the little chickadees that flit about. I was lucky enough to catch this guy one day.

Longs Peak, Colorado

Long's Peak, Colorado

If you have ever visited Rocky Mountain National Park, you soon learn the highest mountain you see is the beautiful, Longs Peak. It is one of the 54 fourteeners, in the state. It is the highest peak (14,259 feet, 4,346 meters) along the Front Range and is prominent on the Denver skyline. It is named in honor of Major Stephen Long, who explored the area in the 1820s. (If you have a Colorado quarter, the mountain on the back is Longs Peak.)

The painting is based on a photograph I took, from the western end of Standley Lake. This view is about a mile away from my front door. Oh how great it is to live in Rocky Mountain High.

This painting was inspired by Tina Rena, a lovely model from Holland, Michigan. She and her photographer husband, Craig, teamed up on some photos they have graciously allowed me to use. She is a living work of art, and it is a joy to be able to paint her.
