Monument Valley

Monument Valley
24 x 48 inches
Oil on canvas
(c) Bill Brauker

Monument Valley is a remarkable place. When you visit, it will stay with you forever. The vastness of it is incredible and that sky, well, it takes your breath away. One of the interesting things we noticed is that the white clouds had a red cast to them on the bottom, from the reflection from the ground. When I got home, I just couldn't get the vision of this place out of my mind. This was a joy to paint.

The Veil

The Veil
9 x 12 inches
Oil on wood panel
(c) Bill Brauker

I have been fiddling away with three large paintings that are 99 percent finished, but I never seem to call it quits with them. So yesterday, I decided to paint something I could finish at one time. This painting is based on the photo of a lovely friend, who graciously allowed me to use her image as inspiration.

I currently have paintings for sale on eBay. You can find them here.

I have always loved Edgar Dega's works of lovely ladies in their boudoir, and thought I would do one of my own.

Sunflower

Sunflower
11 x 14 inches
Oil on wood panel
(c) Bill Brauker

Anne and I had such fun on our road trip to WY, MT and SD, last week, that I decided I wanted to continue the fun when I got home. I have been working on three large paintings, one of Monument Valley, another of Notting Hill Station in London, and a nude. They are all about 95 percent done, but I wanted to do something that I could finish fast and would be fun to do.

This spring, I planted some sunflowers in the back yard, and this guy grew to be eight feet tall. I captured him at the height of his beauty with the cobalt blue, Colorado sky behind. Was it fun?Oh yes, it was!

Email me if you are interested in purchasing this painting for $200.

Another in a series of Western paintings. Shiprock, is a rock formation rising nearly 1,583 feet (482.5 m) above the high-desert plain on the Navajo Nation in San Juan County, New Mexico. It's 7,177 feet (2,187.5 m) above the sea level, in the Northwest corner of the state.
Shiprock is the remnant of the throat of a volcano.

Shiprock is an amazing sight as it rises above the desert.

Art Show Shadows

Art Show Shadows
9 x 12 inches
Oil on wood panel
(c) Bill Brauker

This is my lovely wife, Anne, viewing some paintings at the Cherry Creek Arts Festival in Denver, in early July. The festival draws 350,000 visitors into the streets to see the art. This is the shadowy side of the booth housing the paintings of Phyllis Stapler, an artist who lives in the Four Corners area. Be sure to click on her name and take a look at some of her work.

San José de Gracia Church, Las Trampas, NM

San José de Gracia Church, Las Trampas, NM
9 x 12 inches
Oil on wood panel
(c) Bill Brauker

Las Trampas, a small town on the scenic High Road to Taos, is approximately halfway between Santa Fe and Taos. The town was founded in 1751 and is known for the lovely San José de Gracia Church, built between 1760 and 1776. The church is a great example of adobe architecture. We stopped in mid afternoon in intense sunshine. The clear cobalt blue sky was amazing.

Mountain View

Mountain View
9 x 12 inches
Oil on wood panel
(c) Bill Brauker

This is a view from our favorite mountain to climb, Chief Mountain, 11,709 feet. The painting was based on a photo I took, just as we broke above the tree line on the way to the top. There are a number of spectacular views in Colorado, and the view from Chief Mountain ranks near the top for me.

Update

Just an update to let you know that I haven't quit painting, or fallen off the earth. I have been working on several larger pieces that have not hit the finished stage yet, but should soon. Also I had a road trip to Utah and New Mexico and my sister came to visit, so have been quite busy. Hope to post some new work in a few days.

San Francisco de Asis Church, Taos

San Francisco de Asis Church, Taos

Construction began on this beautiful church in 1772. It is a Taos landmark, and has been photographed and painted thousands of times. This is my contribution. This view is the rear of the church on a cold evening at sunset, February 2010.

Email me if you are interested in purchasing it.

Painted Desert Trees, Arizona

Painted Desert Trees, Arizona
11 x 14 inches
Oil on wood panel
(c) Bill Brauker

These were some trees I spotted near the Petrified Forest National Park, Visitor Center. It was early afternoon, and the sun was beating down on the desert. If you are ever in the area, be sure to stop. The petrified wood is interesting to see, but what makes a stop here special, are the amazing views of the Painted Desert.

The Back Gate, Taos

The Back Gate, Taos
8 x 10 inches
Oil on wood panel
(c) Bill Brauker

This was actually painted back in February, as a gift for our friends, Julie and Fred Felix, who graciously allowed us to spend a couple of nights with them in their lovely house in Taos, New Mexico. In the excitement over our trip, I had forgotten to take a photo of the finished painting, so Julie took a photo for me. This is the back gate to their house. I used a photo that Julie had posted on her Facebook page as the reference for the painting.

Adobe House

Adobe House
5 x 7 inches
Oil on wood panel
(c) Bill Brauker

This is my first painting based on photos I took recently on an 8 day road trip with Anne and my sister Robin from Michigan. We went down to NM, then over to AZ where we got together with relatives. On the way back we spent two days in Taos with friends. We had great fun, and I have many, many photos of great landscapes. So check back as I continue to work on more.

This house was across the street from the Painted Desert Inn, in the Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona. I loved how the late afternoon sunlight played on the adobe.

If you would like to purchase the painting for $125, (free shipping) email me.

Karin Jurick

This portrait of Karin Jurick was part of a project created by Jill Polsby. Karin operates a great site, Different Strokes from Different Folks, where she chooses a photo and many artists paint it. In December, she has artists send a photo of themselves and the photos are exchanged and everyone does a portrait of someone else. To thank her for her work on the project, Jill thought it would be nice if artists who have participated in the past do a portrait of Karin.

There was a great response. To see the 118 portraits, click here.

Front Range Sunset

Front Range Sunset
11 x 14 inches
Oil on wood panel
(c) Bill Brauker

This is one of my favorite views. I have based the painting on a photo I took from the east end of Standley Lake, (about 1/4 mile from my house) looking towards the front range of the Rocky Mountains. We have spectacular sunsets almost every night, and every one is different. It is wonderful to look out and see the mountains, as they range through different shades of blue as the sun dips behind them.

I haven't posted much work on here lately, but I have been busily painting. I completed a small portrait of a friend over the weekend. (I won't be able to post it for several weeks, as it is a surprise.) I'm also working on a 30 x 40 inch painting of a train pulling into Notting Hill Gate Station in London. It is based on this photo I took a couple of years ago.

I also have two others in progress, an 8 X 10 inch still life of a vase of sunflowers, and a 16 x 20 inch of a lovely nude woman from the back on a green couch in a dark green room.

So keep checking in, I should have one or more of these to post soon.

Please contact me regarding availability and prices of any of my paintings. I will occasionally put some on eBay, but find that the cost of doing business with eBay and the lack of support for sellers has turned me off from using it much.
