Stanley Hotel Lobby, Estes Park, Colorado

Stanley Hotel Lobby
5 x 7 inches
Oil on canvas panel.
SOLD

In October I went to Estes Park, Colorado to the Stanley Hotel. It was built in 1909 by Freelan O. Stanley, who invented the Stanley Steamer. This is the hotel that inspired, Stephen King to write, The Shining. The film with Jack Nicholson, was not filmed there, but the mini series done in more recent years was. The painting is based on a photo I took. This is a view that looks out onto the large front porch, toward the mountains in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Below is a photo I took of the Stanley that same day.

Jean, Susan and Barb, thanks so much for your lovely comments. I love doing interiors and the lighting on this was so much fun to play with.

Thanks Bill, it was fun to see the Stanley again after all these years (I had spent a weekend there about 1982 as a companion to one of the David Taylor Dance Theatre members who were performing there-- it was just being renovated and was still a bit spooky).

Your painting is quite compelling; I like the light spilling onto the floor and the mysterious yellow glow in the background echoing the lamp. Very nice!

That movie was one of the scariest, ever. The Alhambra..the little kid riding that big wheel around and around.. Jack getting more evil by the minute. I've never been able to see him as anyone else since. He just looks evil.

Nice little interior, you have here.

Superb handling of light in the Stanley Hotel lobby Bill, a gorgeous painting - and nice of you to paint Big Ben too! Yes, the snow has been really heavy and as I write this it is snowing again. Unusual for UK really.
